The project starts with an introduction in Ecuador’s capital Quito on Sunday and you then fly to the Galapagos  Islands on Monday. It is on the island of San Cristobal the project is located and you work monday to friday.

1 week:

On Friday after a week of work in San Cristobal’s Highlands, volunteers spend one night in the harbor on the island of San Cristobal. On Saturday there is a guided tour of Kickers Rock. On Sundays it is a morning snorkeling tour on the island of Santa Cruz and the flight back to Quito is on Monday afternoon.

2 and 3 weeks:

On Friday after one or two week’s work (depending on the chosen alternative) , volunteers go down to the harbor where you stay in a hostel for two nights. Saturday has no tours, then you can enjoy all that San Cristobal has to offer. On Sunday morning you go on a boat to the island of Santa Cruz. On sunday afternoon there is a snorkeling trip. On monday afternoon, you continue by boat to Isabela. The following days are spent on the Island Isabela. A trip to the Sierra Negra volcano is included on Tuesdays. On Thursday evening, the volunteers return to Santa Cruz and on Friday the man returns to Quito.

Your role as a volunteer:

  • Assistance on reforestation projects established by local institutions.

About the country

Ecuador is a microcosm of South America – everything on the continent is also in this small country. Here you will meet with colors and smells, vibrant cities, rich wildlife and proud people. Did you know that the country got its name after the equator and that most of the country is south of this line? The landscape is characterized by the Andean, Pacific and Amazon mountain ranges. The contrasts are large but the distances are short.

The Galapagos Islands are located approximately 1000 kilometers west of Ecuador in South America. Galapagos belongs to Ecuador and consists of 13 major islands and a number of smaller islands. Since 1978, the territory of the Galapagos Islands has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage List, and in 2001 the Marine Reserve was also named as a World Heritage.  Only five of the islands are inhabited.

Weather

Although the Galapagos Islands are located in a tropical zone, the climate is dry and pleasant because of the cold Humboldt stream. There are two different seasons: the warm and humid seasons from December to May and the dry season from May to December. During these two periods the temperature is relatively stable; during the warm period the daytime temperature is around 27-30 ° C and the night temperature around 21-23 ° C. During the dry period, the daytime temperature is 24-27 ° C and the night temperature is around 18-22 ° C. The precipitation changes from year to year and from island to island!
