About the country

Vietnam is situated in Southeast Asia and borders to China, Cambodia and Laos. The country consists of 75% mountains and the main religion is Buddhism. Vietnam is best known for the stunning scenery and of course the Vietnam War. You can still see the reflections from the war in many ways, especially in Ho Chi Minh City, previously called Saigon.

In the capital, Hanoi, you can visit the famous Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and several museums. If you are in central Vietnam, take the opportunity to visit Hue, the old imperial city, with graves from the Nguyen Dynasty. Vietnam’s history has been influenced a lot from China. The country belonged to China until year 938. Ho Chi Minh City has the war fresh in mind and you can visit places like the Reunification Palace, where you can see the devastating consequences the war had on the Vietnamese. And outside of the city, you can visit the famous Cu Chi tunnels. If you want to take it easy and relax, it’s recommended to take a quiet stroll in the city’s botanical garden. Of course, the city also offers you a big variation of shopping centers, restaurants and nightclubs. The Vietnamese cuisine is very reminiscent of Thai cuisine. The food is not as spicy as Thai food, but very aromatic. It is characterized by flavors like lemongrass, ginger, mint, Thai basil and star anise. Do not miss the Vietnamese spring rolls or Nuoc mam – a Vietnamese fish sauce that is widely used in many dishes.
