Antique yet up-to-the-minute, familiar yet unrecognisable, outwardly urban but quintessentially rural, conservative yet path-breaking, space-age but old-fashioned, China is a land of mesmerizing and eye-opening contradictions. China is the world’s fourth largest country by surface area with more than one billion inhabitants. It holds everything from ancient traditions and world famous structures, to a society and economy that is growing at a light speed. Here you can find a mixture of skyscrapers and sheds made of corrugated iron, both connected with never-ending crowds of people on bicycles.
To see and do
When you are free from your volunteer work there are exciting attractions and activities for you to see and do. Here is a few:
China is a enormous country, the world’s third biggest, with a surface of around 9,6 million square kilometers. Capital Beijing has around 12 million citizens. The biggest city is Shanghai with approximately 16 million inhabitants. Large parts of the country´s mountainous inside is sparsely inhabit.
West and South-West of China is covered by the Tibetan high plateau, that in the south border to the world’s biggest mountain chain Himalaya. On the border against Nepal lies the world’s biggest mountain, Mount Everest. In northwest region Xinjiangs spreads steppeland and desert area out itself and in the lowland in southeast is the terrain uneven with tableland and river valley.
With its great size China has many different types of nature areas and there is something for everyone.
In the south of China you can see the classical Sugar top mountains.
Near Shanghai you can find Huangshan, the Yeallow Mountain, which is famous of being the most beautiful mountain in China.
Summer palace in Beijing is worth a visit, here you can find a giant Chinese garden. The park contains all of the elements that should exist in a Chinese garden – water, mountains, houses and greenery.
Sun & sea
China is not known to be a sun and bathe destination, but fact is that Chinas biggest island can offer white beaches and crystal clear water. The food that is served on Hainan is well known and contains fresh food from the water. In the central parts of the island there is rainforest, hot springs, fruit orchard and rice terraces.
China has a culture that is thousands of years old. Here you can discover everything from fantastic food, to the unique written language and all traditions and customs that China has to offer. Take the chance to experience the architecture by visiting the Great Wall of China and the Forbidden City in Beijing.
The Great Wall of China was built by Chinas first emperor, Shi Huangdi. He built the wall 200 years before Christ to protect himself from enemies. Within 10 miles from Beijing there is several places that you can visit the Great Wall of China from.
The Forbidden City is located in the centre of Beijing that was the emperor’s palace and the home for 24 emperors during Ming- and Qing dynasties. The palace is 960 meters long and 750 meters vide. It is surrounded by a 50 meter vide ditch and a 10 meter high wall. In the Forbidden City there is 90 halls and courtyards, 980 buildings and 9999 rooms.
If you are near Yaán and Chengdu we recommend you to try some of the following activities:
- Chose one of many hiking trails. Guided tours is available to climb the mountains and for the waterfalls nearby.
- Fish in the lakes near the hiking trails around the Panda center.
- Visit one of many parks in Chengdu, take a drink by the river, eat traditionell Sichuan Hot Pot and look when the local people plays mah-jong or why not take a massage.
- Visit the Sichuan opera and se the traditional ”happy and sad face masks.
Considering the size of China is it hard to say a general climate in China. China spread on several different climate areas, from subtropical in the north to tropical climate in the south. Chinas most northern part lies on the same latitude as Denmark and the most south part lies in the tropical climate zoon, which does that both nature and the climate vary.
During spring and autumn it is most comfortable to visit China. It doesn´t rain much, temperatures is hot and the air is high and clear. But have in mind how big China actually is, Beijing can be cool during spring and autumn meanwhile in the south there is high summer.
