Volunteer with health related issues either at a local health centre or with one of the various municipal health projects. Also an option for this project is to work with various street projects, where you essentially act as a support and security to children living on the street. Tasks vary according to the project, covering everything from home visits, to regular check-ups to comply with vaccination schedules.
Project fee from EUR 2,040
Your Role as a Volunteer
These projects are known to be particularly unique due to their level of flexibility. If you are interested in working with a particular project or a specific thing, it can almost always be arranged. In majority of cases we are able to “customize” each volunteers trip that it suited to your particular skills and experience.
If you would like to work at the health centre or hospital it is advantageous to speak Spanish to some degree. There are various departments to choose from depending on what area you would like to focus on.
In addition to Spanish, it is required that you have experience in health care jobs or are about to begin your medical or nursing career.
The Project’s Mission
Our local partners goal is to facilitate volunteers to projects where they can make a difference for people who are worst off in the community.
Our Ecuador project is run in cooperation with a local NGO. Thanks to this cooperation, Volunteer Travels can offer you a well-organized and safe experience as a volunteer.

Additionally, they will provide information about your location, what is expected of you, about your host family, more about the culture, as well as personal safety and other issues you might have to deal with. Other practical issues will also be covered and your Spanish language studies outlined. If you would like to start early, Spanish lessons can be arrange in these 2 initial orientation days.
Accommodation and Food
All volunteer are accommodated with local Ecuadorian host families. These families are from the middle class of the community, which is probably not the same standard that you are used to. Most houses do not have central heating which sometimes makes it very cold. Breakfast and dinner will be eaten with the family, while lunch is your own responsibility.
When it is not working you are free to explore the surroundings on your own or simply just enjoy life.
Exactly 30 hours of Spanish studies are included in the tour price. Lessons will be tailored to you specifically depending on your previous knowledge of Spanish. You will be able to practice your Spanish at “home” with your host family of course, which will help you to learn very quickly. If at the end of your 30 hours, if you decide to continue please note that this will be at your own expense.
Ecuador is a microcosm of America – everything on the continent is also available in this small country. Here, you see colours and scents, abundant wildlife and proud people. Did you know that the country is named after the equator, and the greater part of the country lies south of this line? The landscape is marked by the Andes mountain range, the Pacific and the Amazon. The contrasts are great but the distances are short. In large parts of the country, man lives in harmony with nature, but the pulse of the city is making itself felt in Quito and Guayaquil. The equator gem has something for everyone!
Flight tickets are not included in the tour price. You can book your tickets from any local travel agency of your choice. Your ticket must be booked so that you arrive in Quito on the day before the project starts, a Sunday. Your last day is on Friday, after the number of weeks you have chosen to work as a volunteer. If you want to go home right after the end of the project, you should book a trip home for the next day, ie, Saturday. Be sure to check the arrival and departure on your ticket.
Please note: when you leave Ecuador you will have to pay an airport departure tax which is currently $40.00 but which might change. This is not included in the tour price.
It is the volunteers responsibility to acquire the right visa for the trip. Different visa rules may apply depending on your nationality. Visit the embassy web page of your destination to find out what the visa terms are between your country and that destination.
NOTE! From February 2018 it is mandatory to be able to present a proof of travel insurance when entering Ecuador.
You are responsible for your insurance covers, such as sickness, damage and theft while working as a volunteer. You can get the travel insurance done from your ticketing agent who can suggest you the best options regarding your travel Insurance. However, included in the tour price is liability insurance, covering you for times when you as an individual are required to pay for damages if you have unintentionally hurt someone or damaged someone else’s property.
You should contact your nearest vaccination centre for any questions regarding vaccinations. They will advise you on which vaccinations are necessary for travelling to Ecuador.
