A few hours’ drive outside the hectic big city of Quito, you will find the Otavalo region. It’s well-known for having one of the largest domestic markets in the whole of Latin America! Never have you felt so close to the Incas and the exciting traditional people of Ecuador. A few kilometres from the more famous Otavalo is the lesser known Peguche. A small village surrounded by its beautiful countryside that reflects the stunning Ecuadorian countryside and its friendly inhabitants.

Your Role as a Volunteer
Ecuador Projects do have a high degree of flexibility. If you are interested in working with a particular project or have some of your own wishes or visions, our partners often help to arrange this. In the majority of cases, we can try to “customize” a volunteer position that takes advantage of your particular skills and experience.
There are different kinds of volunteering in Peguche, you can choose between:
The roles and duties in all the various volunteering projects are flexible; you can have your own ideas on how you would like to contribute during your volunteering period. Any form of help is appreciated, you can develop new methods and your suggestions will be welcomed. Your imagination and creativity are the most important attributes you can have to gain and share in the wonderful experiences during your volunteering period.
The Project’s Mission
Our partner are constantly working to find projects where you can improve the situation of those who need help in Quito area
Ecuador project is run in cooperation with a local NGO. Thanks to this cooperation, Volunteer Vacations offer you a well-organized and safe experience as a volunteer. It’s a guaranteed meaningful stay for those who volunteer and for the local population.
How do I book a trip?
You can book your trip with Volunteer Travels by calling us on (+46) 08-23 93 00 or by booking through our website www.volunteertravels.com by clicking on “Book a trip”. You can also email us on [email protected] When you have registered yourself we will send you an invoice with a registration fee of £200.00. The registration fee is later incorporated into the trip price and the amount is then deducted from your final invoice. When you have paid the registration fee you are formally registered. You will then receive preparatory information from us in good time to plan your trip.
Your Everyday Life
Upon arrival in Quito you will meet our local partners at the airport. Our local partner will give you a short introduction on your code of conduct for your time as a volunteer. You will receive information about your volunteer location and what you are expected to do, family housing, about Latin American culture, about personal safety and more. You would also go through details of your Spanish classes and how you would like to schedule it, this can be planned with your teacher. You can start your Spanish lessons during these two days as well.
You spend your first night in Otavalo and the day after you will be transferred to your host family in Peguche.
Accommodation and Food
All volunteers will be accommodated with local Ecuadorian host families. You get your own room and we would recommend you to stay with the same family during these seven weeks. The standard of the Ecuadorian houses are not the same as the UK or Europe, but you can expect basic needs fulfilled. Ecuadorian houses generally have no central heating so it can sometimes be a bit chilly. Families that our volunteer will stay with in Peguche are considered poor compare to the middle class families in Quito. You would have two meals (breakfast and dinner) with the family every day. Ecuadorian food can be fun and you can also try your hand at cooking if you want a change.
In your free time, you could explore the surroundings on your own or simply just enjoy relaxing.
30 hours of Spanish lessons are included in the price. Your lessons will be tailored to your level. If you have no knowledge of Spanish, you start from the beginning and of course if you already have a little knowledge you will be placed in the appropriate level. How to schedule these lessons is up to you and your teachers. If you want to take all the lessons in the beginning you can do that and if you want to spread them out a bit, it is possible as well. It would not be too difficult because you have the ability to speak Spanish “at home” with your family. If you want you can buy more Spanish lessons on site.
Ecuador is a microcosm of South America – everything on the continent is also available in this small country. Here, you see colours, scents and an abundance of wildlife and proud people. Did you know that the country is named after the equator, and the greater part of the country lies south of this line? The landscape is marked by the Andes mountain range, the Pacific and the Amazon. The contrasts are great but the distances are short. In large parts of the country, man lives in harmony with nature, but the pulse of the city is making itself felt in Quito and Guayaquil. The equator gem has something for everyone!
Flight tickets are not included in the tour price. You can book your tickets from any local travel agency of your choice. Your ticket must be booked so that you arrive in Quito a day before the project starts. Your last day is on Friday, after the number of weeks you have chosen to work as a volunteer. If you want to go home right after the end of the project, you should book a trip home for the next day, i.e., Saturday, or Sunday. Be sure to check the arrival and departure dates on your ticket.
Note When leaving Ecuador, you must pay an airport tax currently at $ 40, not included in the tour price.
It is the volunteers responsibility to acquire the right visa for the trip. Different visa rules may apply depending on your nationality. Visit the embassy web page of your destination to find out what the visa terms are between your country and that destination.
NOTE! From February 2018 it is mandatory to be able to present a proof of travel insurance when entering Ecuador.
It is your responsibility to make sure that your insurance covers illness, injury and theft whilst you are volunteering. Most travel agency’s sell a travel insurance that is valid for volunteer work, so be sure to enquire about it when booking your flight tickets. Volunteer Travels does however, supply liability insurance and is included in the price. Liability insurance applies to instances when compensation for damages is demanded of you, as a private person, for unintentionally hurting someone or for unintentionally damaging someone else’s property.
You should contact your nearest vaccination centre for any questions regarding vaccinations. They will advise you on which vaccinations are necessary when travelling to Ecuador.
