Our project in East London is perfect for you who really want to make a difference for children in South Africa. Every week you will work three days at a daycare and two days at an orphanage where you create a safe place and give the children closeness and warmth. You live and work together with other volunteers in the coastal city East London. Here you will find some of the most beautiful beaches in South Africa.
East London Daycare and Orphanage
Project fee from EUR 1,070
Your Role as a Volunteer
The orphanage and daycare center, located in East London, is run by and supported by a local family-run organisation that volunteers will be staying with and working alongside. East London is located on the coast, northeast of Port Elizabeth in South Africa. Here you will work Monday, Thursday and Friday at the daycare. Saturday and Sunday you will help out at the orphanage. Usually you are off on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
The work can range from pre-school, help with homework, help with daily chores and English teaching.
The children attending the orphanage and daycare are mostly Xhosa speaking; however some can speak a little English. Staff running the orphanage and crèche also have a limited knowledge of English; however the members running Family Voluntary Service are all English speakers.
The Projects Mission
The project aims to give children a platform to build their own lives, create hope and dreams.
The project is run in cooperation with a small local organization responsible for the contacts in place. Thanks to this cooperation, Volunteertravels offer you a well-organized and safe experience as a volunteer. There is a guaranteed meaningful stay, both for you as a volunteer and for the local population.

Your Everyday Life
The program begins on a Monday and volunteers will receive a brief introduction to the area and the work that they will be involved with during their stay. It should be noted that projects and tasks for volunteers change on a continual basis due to the progress of projects within the organisations day-to-day running. Volunteers will then receive continuous supervision during your placement.
Accommodation and Food
Volunteers stay at the organisation members own home, located about 30 minutes away from the orphanage, in a smaller town called Abbottsford. The family consists of Angelique and Matthew and thier daugther Elisa. Volunteers live in a house next to the family. They run the organisation that supports the orphanage and daycare center, with nursing experience, previous voluntary work, HIV/AIDS training and years of charity work amounting to much experience in this field. As a volunteer, you will stay with a maximum of two others in a bedroom. The meals are “western”. (If you have the special diet and need anything else than offered, you might have to pay extra for this). Volunteers help out with cooking, dishes and laundry and share the household chores.
Wifi is available at the house, allowing volunteers to reconnect with their family and friends in their spare-time. Additionally, volunteers will be provided a cell phone between them, during their stay at the project.
Transport to your volunteer activities will be provided by your host family by car.
You work 5 days a week and are off two days. In this time volunteers are free to explore both the city and its surrounding areas. The sea is located just a short ride away from the house. East London’s main city centre is 30minutes drive away with many shops, movies and entertainment facilities. As East London is located on the coast, volunteers will also be able to go surfing through the local backpackers.
There are many places to visit in the Eastern Cape Province where East London is located. Some of these include: the world’s highest bungee jump, a famous mountain area that inspired the Lord of the Rings author, as well as the nationally famous Addo Elephant Park. Other activities include, hiking, kayaking, skydiving, mountain biking and much more. In addition to the document sent to you by Volunteer Travels, your host family will provide you will at the details needed to arrange your trips such as telephone numbers and contacts.
About South Africa
South Africa is one of Africa’s most exciting countries. It is an interesting mix of Europe, Africa and Asia. The landscape is as diverse as the cultural characteristics, aptly named the “Rainbow Nation”. South Africa provides the excitement of Africa with the luxury of the “first world”.
