Your Role as a Volunteer

At this project you work together with a P.E. teacher at a school and have around 20 lessons a week from Monday to Thursday. Sometimes you will also work Fridays and Saturdays when there is football games. You will activate the children with sports like football, hockey and many more.

There are many children in Cape Town who come from a messy home situation. Often children living in difficult situations spend more time away from home, thus spending more time on the street and as a result getting involved with drugs. As a volunteer with this project you can help them stay off the street and mold themselves a better future. You will work as a volunteer at a football club in Cape Town, where young people go after school hours. Here children are able to engage in something that they like or are good at. The club also provides a safe place for the kids, where leaders and mentors help them and where they are able to just be children.

Ages of the children range between 7 to 14 years old. The project aims to increase these children’s self-esteem, by giving them an opportunity to experience something apart from the norm. Sports give these children an opportunity to experience a positive community as well as motivation to stay off the street.

Some tasks you may be involved with include:

  • Facilitating and leading team practice.
  • Creating workshops and creative exercises for the children to practice their football/sport skills or become fitter.
  • Mentoring the children.

This project runs all year except during school holidays.

The Project’s Mission

To motivate football and sport interested kids and teenagers to make their dreams come true.

Your Everyday Life

Orientation

The program begins on Thursday starting in Cape Town. You will be picked up at the airport and taken directly to the volunteer centre where you will meet up with any other volunteers that are there. On Friday you will go through the project’s orientation which will tell you more about safety and other important information for your stay. Your orientation will also include a trip to a museum which will show you a good picture of South Africa’s history. On Saturday your orientation will take you on a guided tour to visit some of the area’s tourist destinations. You will also visit a church where, if you’re lucky, you might meet Desmond Tutu! He was the first black South African archbishop and he received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984. On the Sunday you will be able to tour the city on your own or meet up with the host family that will be looking after you during your time at the orphanage.

Accommodation and Food

During your orientation you will be staying at a backpackers along with other foreign visitors to Cape Town. Following your orientation you can choose to stay at the backpackers or be placed with a local South African host family.

The backpackers is located in the Observatory . There are rooms with 3-6 beds in each, together with a communal bathroom. Also at the backpackers is wireless network where you can connect to the internet. Breakfast and dinner is included with your stay at the backpackers, however, you will need to provide your own lunch and take it with you to the orphanage. There is a kitchen at the centre should you wish to cook for yourself.

If you choose to stay with a host family, they are primarily located in Athlone. You can choose to either share a bedroom with another volunteer or have a room for yourself. Most of the families are from the middle class however, the living standards vary. Normally they are lower than what you will be used to. However, there is always a bathroom, running water and it will be clean and tidy. Breakfast and dinner will be eaten with the family; however you will need to arrange lunch for yourself.

Local Transport

You can also choose to rent a car along with another volunteer, costing around €85 per day. You will need to be at least 19 years old and have an internationally recognized driver’s license to rent a car.

Trains can also be caught between Athlone and Cape Town, with a weekly tickets costing around €33.00 for the week.

About South Africa

South Africa is one of Africa’s most exciting countries. It is an interesting mix of Europe, Africa and Asia. Some of the challenges South Africa faces is to reduce poverty and injustice, to consolidate democracy and promote respect for human rights. The landscape is as diverse as the cultural characteristics, aptly named the “Rainbow Nation”. South Africa provides the excitement of Africa with the luxury of the “first world”.

Practical

Flight

Flight tickets are not included in the tour price. You can book flights through a travel agency of your choice, please just be sure to arrive in Cape Town on your allocated start date a  Thursday). Your last work day is Friday, so book the ticket home for a Sunday. Make sure to double check this and let us know of your travel arrangements.

Visas

It is the volunteers responsibility to acquire the right visa for the trip. Different visa rules may apply depending on your nationality. Visit the embassy web page of your destination to find out what the visa terms are between your country and that destination.

Infectious Diseases

HIV / AIDS and TB are common diseases in South Africa and they appear on all of our health care and social-oriented projects. It is very important that you are aware of the risks and that you follow the instructions given.
