Senegal is one of West Africa’s top destinations. Cities have a French colonial appearance with wide streets and beautiful houses. Dakar, the capital city is vibrant and colourful with chaotic markets and excellent musicians. It lies on the Atlantic coast and has a deep harbour making Dakar an important port for the country. Senegal is a tropical country with hot and humid weather, this river laced land of marshes and plains was once ruled by Wolof Chieftans.
To see and do
When you are not working there are exciting activities to see and do. Here are a few examples of what you can experience while going abroad as a volunteer.
Nikolo-Koba is the largest and most well known national park in Senegal. Here live 80 different mammals and 350 different birds. You can among other things see buffalos, hippopotami, western giant eland, elephants, lions, chimpanzees, waterbuck and many more animals. Some of the birds you can see is Arabian bustard, black crowned crane and southern ground-hornbill.
The park lies in southeast Senegal and is on UNESCOs world heritage´s list.
Île de Madeleine outside the coast of Dakar, approximately 4 kilometers out in the water lies three small islands together with volcanic rocks that creates Île de Madeleine. Here you will have the opportunity to see turtles and dolphins. Also there is a natural pool on the island where you have the opportunity to snorkel.
Oiseaux de Djoudj is the third largest bird reservation in the world, you can see a large number of exotics pieces of birds. The park is most known for its big colony of flamingos and pelicans. Oiseaux de Djoudj is located in the northwest of Senegal and you can hire your own private guide or take part in a group with a guide.
Sun & sea
With the perfect location on Africa’s west coast Senegal offers over 700 kilometers long sand beaches, which border almost the whole coast north and south of Dakar. In the tourist locations such as Saly, it is well-organized beach area were you can try different water sports.
Île de Gorée is an island outside of Dakars coast. On the island there are several museums and even a fortress. “The house of slaves” is most known on the island, a monument in the memory of the largest transshipment point of slaves during the 1300- to 1900 century.
Most of the year it is warm and sunny in Senegal. The climate in the north is dry, meanwhile in the south parts there is more tropical climate.
Rain period lasts from May to November. The average temperature lies around 25 degrees Celsius.
